Movie and Television Review and Classification Board chairman Atty. Eugenio “Toto” Villareal summoned on Saturday comedians Michael V. and Rufa Mae Quinto and several GMA executives to a mandatory conference over a naughty skit aired recently on the GMA gag show “Bubble Gang”.

Villareal issued the summons “with much alarm and concern” over what he termed as the “discriminatory and derogatory portrayal of a woman” in the November 29 episode of the show.

The summons detailed the heavy sexual innuendoes in the segment entitled “D’ Adventures of Susie Luwalhati” where the character of Susie, portrayed by Quinto, applies for a job as a cook and vendor of puto bumbong, and the entrepreneur, played by Michael V. — identified by his real name Beethoven Bunagan — shows her how to make the native delicacy.

Susie’s gestures, Villareal noted, involved the vigorous shaking of her breasts and a seeming simulation of “male abuse”, which were witnessed by a group of young men “with apparently sexually-oriented delight”.

“It appears that the segment stereotypically portrayed a woman as an object of rather frivolous, albeit carnal, delight. When women are treated as commodities, they are disrespected and degraded,” Villareal declared, citing Republic Act 9710 or the Magna Carta of Women.

Villareal also reminded the people behind the show that its MTRCB rating — SPG (Strict Parental Guidance — implies that young people are part of its audience.

Besides Quinto and Bunagan — who is identified as both creative director and talent — also summoned to the conference set for 9AM on Monday at the MTRCB Adjudication Room were head writer Caesar Cosme, director Uro de la Cruz, executive producer Junalyn Navarro, program manager Eva Arespacochaga, vice president for entertainment Marivin Arayata, and vice president for program management Jose Mari Abacan.

“Bubble Gang”, which first aired on October 20, 1995, is the longest-running sketch comedy show on Philippine television. [source]
